The Portuguese black metal band Gaerea released today its new single "Null", aimed to promote their upcoming second full-length album "Limbo", scheduled to come out on 24th July of the present year.
The anonymous band from Porto, known for wearing their masks at all times, has already earned a lot of international recognition in their 4 years career, especially after performing a tour in China last year, also allowing them to sign afterwards with the label Season of Mist.

Interview - Congruity (in Portuguese)
Na primeira entrevista do Insula Tenebris, estivemos à conversa com o Victor Hugo e o Jorge André da banda de death metal portuguesa Congruity. Falamos um pouco sobre a história deles no Mundo da música, da banda, e ainda do Metal em Portugal, entre outros.

Congruity - "Shattered"
The Portuguese blackned death metal band Congruity, first introduced this track "Shattered" as a preview before the debut of their most recent EP of the same name, released on 17th February 2020.
Congruity were formed in the year of 2000, in Abrantes, Santarém, from the ashes of Scale of Justice and goth metal band Edenial Lust, and their original line-up consisted of Hugo Alexandre Rodrigues (drums), Paulo "Lecas" Marcos (guitars & vocals), Geist (guitars), Quim (bass) and Tânia (keybords).
The band launched their first material in 2001, the demo "Equilibrium", followed by a second demo 2 years later "The Underworld", featuring a slight line-up change, now with Victor Hugo Sapage on bass instead of Quim.
The line-up would change again in 2004, with Tânia leaving the band and Jorge André joining in for guitar duties, placing Lecas solely focused on vocals, which resulted on a more agressive sound from this point onwards.
Then in the year that followed, a new demo is released "Rupture", and Congruity went hard on the live scene, performing around 60 gigs through Portugal.
In 2007, Lecas leaves the band and Victor becomes both the bassist and vocalist, this while on a long 10 year gap without introducing new stuff. Finally in 2015, with Congruity presenting themselves as a trio, after the recent leave of Geist, the demo "Rupture" was re-edited and launched as an EP, recorded and mixed by Jorge and Victor at Rotten Garage Studios in their hometown of Abrantes.
This re-edition also included the track "Falling from my Heart", which was featured on their first demo "Equilibrium", and the track "The Underworld" has former member Lecas on vocals.
Later, the 15th December of 2018 was for sure a very special day for Congruity, as they released their first full-length album of the same name, via the label BoneSaw Entertainment.
Nowadays, with the band's line-up still up to the same trio, featuring Hugo (the only original member), Jorge and Victor, Congruity performs regularly in Portuguese ground, having already flyed to Madeira island in November 2018, where they exclusively presented first hand in Funchal, their new album that was yet to be introduced the following month.
Also earlier this year, on 7th March, they were one of the bands that performed at XXXapada Morbid Sessions II in Lisbon, being the only Portuguese act of the event, sharing the stage of RCA Club with Aklash, Necronautical, Nader Sadek and Akercocke.
About their latest work, the EP "Shattered" was again released under the label BoneSaw, and it's available for digital purchase on their official Bandcamp (check the link bellow). A physical CD version is also available, but on a split format with label partners Hate Disposal from Leiria, namely along with their most recent EP "Legacy".

Heresy Meeting II - Heaven Can Wait + Cronaxia
Just like Heresy Meeting I back in November 2018, Heaven Can Wait will be in charge of warming up the crowd on this second edition, but the Madeirian death metal band had some line-up changes since then. So far their discography is made of a demo: "Heaven Can Wait", launched in 2013, and an EP released in 2017 entitled "Draw me a Dream", from which the track bellow "Fairy Tale"was taken.
After this it's time for Cronaxia to take the stage, the death metal trio has been around since 1997, but several line-up changes among some personal issues along the way, allowed them to produce only two releases during this time, but as they say it's better less and good, than too many and bad, and indeed Cronaxia presented us in 2018 with a fine full-length album debut: "Collapsing the Outer Structure, which surely will be in great evidence tonight in Funchal. The track bellow, "Embryonic Reanimation", comes precisely from this work.
Ten years before this, the band launched the 3-track EP: "The Solution Above Continuity".

Infraktor - "Son of a Butcher"
Infraktor is a thrash/death metal project from northern Portugal, founded in the year 2013 by guitarist Carlos Almeida and singer Hugo Silva, that were later joined by the remaining current members Ricardo Martins (guitars), Miguel Pinto (bass) and Francisco Martins (drums).
Their first material, and sole one so far, was released in March 2018 in the shape of a full-length album: "Exhaust", where one can witness the band's harsh extreme metal sound!
Infraktor will be one of the acts to perform at the Portuguese Mangualde Hardmetalfest, taking place next Saturday, and they will be there alongside Praying Mantis, Ancient, Xentrix and others...

Altar of Pain - "Sentient Hive Mind"
A death metal band from Madeira island, Portugal, the project of Altar of Pain started in the summer of 2010 by a group of friends who wanted to play extreme metal in the line of Death, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Vader... The line-up consisted then of Elder Abreu (vocals), Guilherme Abreu (guitars), Zé Rodrigues (guitars) and Marcelo Rodrigues (bass).
Their first demo: "Splattered Remains" was already released in the founding year, and by August 2011 the debut full-length album: "The Ritual Has Begun" came out.
In May 2012, Altar of Pain presented the EP: "Severe Scourge", this before the departure of Elder Abreu from the band.
But in the begining of 2013, the band launched a new track: "Sentient Hive Mind", which is presented bellow, featuring Brandon "Voidspawn" Leigh on vocals, and Daniel Ibarcena as guest on the guitar solo.

Monolith Moon - "Moonlit II. Fermi - Hart Recalculated"

After six years of several live performances and music writing, they released their first material in July 2015, the EP: "Leylines", with four tracks including the one bellow:
Although the band stated in their social media they are now a 4-element project, the last known line-up consists of Sara Freitas (vocals), Diogo Ferreira (guitars), David Mergulho (bass), Daniel Costa (drums), and Gonçalo Costa (keys).

Requiem Laus - "Black Decay"
They are one of the oldest, and undoubtedly one of the most resilient Metal bands from Madeira island, Requiem Laus, a Latin name meaning praised rest in English.
Too well they haven't give up to that praised rest yet, knowing all the adversities that a Metal project can encounter in this small island in the middle of the Atlantic, as they are still producing nowadays.
Altough the name Requiem Laus only came in the mid 90's, the band as been around with their frontman Miguel Freitas since 1989, at the time known as Morbidatory. Later it changed just to Requiem, and then in 1994 to the present name.
With their first line-up: Miguel (vocals & guitars), Bruno Sousa (guitars), Tony Figueira (bass) and Marcelo Freitas (drums), they've released their first material in 1994, the demo "Life Fading Existence", while making some gigs around Portugal to promote their work.
In the years that followed, the band launched a few more demos, "Promo 94" still in 1994, "For the Ones Who Died" in 1996, and "Through Aeons" in 2000. But before this last one, in 1998, when Dani Pereira came in for guitars replacing Bruno Sousa, Ricardo Fernandes for bass and Jorge Castro, the author of the band's lyrics, was added to play keyboards, they re-released on CD, the demo "For the Ones Who Died".
In the beggining of the new millennium, the band stuggles with the loss of members, and Requiem Laus at this phase enters on a hiatus, returning in 2005, launching in the following year already a new demo: "Promo 2006", here with Jorge Abreu on drums.
Also in 2006, they take part in the IX edition of the Portuguese renowned SWR Barroselas Metal Fest, performing with bands like Bolt Thrower, God Dethroned, Hate and Carpathian Forest.
Finally, in 2007, they begin the recording and mixing of their first full-length album: "The Eternal Plague", at the Studio Underground in Sweden, after another change positions on the drums, featuring now Gabrielle on that spot. In that same year, Requiem Laus has the privilege to be one of the opening acts of an Akercocke show, along with Paranormal Waltz and Disaffected.
In 2008, the studio album "The Eternal Plague" is then released under the label of 666 Productions, and also the band is invited to perform at Grândola Metal Fest in Portugal, sharing the stage with Krisiun, Lay Down Rotten, Devildriver, and others...
Three years later, Requiem Laus presents us with their second full-length: "As Long as Darkness Bleeds", the first production recorded at Blackart Studios, and mixed/mastered at the Soundlodge Studio in Germany, by Jörg Uken. Already in the following year, the band launches an EP: "Impulse".
In the meantime, a four year gap happens until Requiem Laus' next release, but in the Summer of 2014, they had the opportunity to perform at Vagos Open Air, in northern Portugal, with other big names such as Gojira, Kreator, Paradise Lost and Behemoth.
Then in 2016, and keeping the same cooperation of recording at Blackart Studio and mixing/mastering at Soundlodge, another EP is released: "A Higher Claim", now with Jörg Uken also recording the drum parts in Germany, besides his mixing/mastering duties. Still in this year, the 1996 demo: "For the Ones Who Died", is re-edited with some bonus studio tracks, a live track and a Sepultura cover.
In 2017, Requiem Laus releases two more EP's: "The Last Winter" plus "Hate & Despair", and finally their most recent EP: "The Future", was launched earlier this year, in April.
For sure this won't be the last time we hear of Requiem Laus, as the band will keep fighting all the constraints that an islander death metal band like them has to endure, and we will continue listening to their fine work! The current line-up consists of Miguel Freitas (the only original member still on), Dani Pereira, Ricardo Fernandes, Pedro Pereira (on keyboards), and still Jörg Uken recording the drums in Germany.

Dallian - "Caixa Pensatória"
Did you ever thought that Metal music could blend in well with Portuguese traditional Fado? No? Well me neither... until I've listened to this track by Dallian: "Caixa Pensatória", and realized how these two very unlikely allies could work along well together.
And it's really amazing when you listen, more towards the end of this song, to the transition of the strong powerful riffs giving place to the deep sad Fado music. It's the only track of the album where you can listen to this Metal/Fado fusion, as the rest it's all about the main prog/symphonic death metal sound of the band, but it does prove that when there's an open mind and creativity, one can blend in various genres and styles altogether.
Dallian were founded just two years ago in Leiria, Portugal, and the band describe themselves as being an unlikely synthesis, due to the alchemical merging of Metal music and the aesthetics of steampunk. The members are Carlos Amado (vocals/guitars/Portuguese guitar), Ricardo Carniça (guitars/backing vocals), Leandro Faustino (guitars) and André Fragoso (drums/percurssion).
In May of last year they have released their first full-length album: "Automata", so far the band's unique work of their discography, but surely one of many more to come!

It's the only track of the album where you can listen to this Metal/Fado fusion, as the rest it's all about the main prog/symphonic death metal sound of the band, but it does prove that when there's an open mind and creativity, one can blend in various genres and styles altogether.

Today I end up this week of special posts dedicated to MetalMad's Oath Circle Meeting II, none other with Portuguese black metal band Gaerea, and the official video of this track: "Absent", taken from their debut full-length album: "Unsettling Whispers" released last year.
Gaerea were formed in Porto, back in May 2016, and are made of five elements which prefer to stay anonymous, wearing masks on their live shows for that purpose. When asked about that, they simply reply: "Everyone wears a mask!".
In November of their starting year, the band launched their first EP titled after the own name: "Gaerea", and as mentioned above, two years later the first full-length release came out to the World.
With such a short career already, Gaerea have been conquering great international recognition, and their last mini-tour of eight gigs in China back in May is a good proof of that, being also one of the few Portuguese bands to perform in Asian ground.
For all of these reasons to start with, needless to say it will be a tremendous honor to welcome Gaerea on stage tonight at the DTOX bar in Funchal, Madeira, and feel their mighty and austere black metal echoing through the venue, also know as Mad Dungeon.
To finish, I will quote here how Gaerea describe themselves, which pretty much says what their project and identity are:

Basalto - "XV"
The stoner/doom metal trio from Viseu, Portugal have just launched a new album: "Odor", their third full-length release, and their characteristic deep and doom rhytims are more present than ever in this new work.
"XV" is one of the four tracks of "Odor", as the band continues to name their songs with roman letters, following the right sequence since their very first track: "I". According to them, it's a way to register the band's evolution while seeking their own identity.
Just like the previous album, it was also inspired by the lyrics of Martim Sousa, which created this poem divided in four parts (in this case four songs), whose meaning matches like a glove when sung with the thunderous voice of António Baptista.
Basalto were founded in February of 2015, and in the following year they released the first album titled after their own name: "Basalto". In 2018 came the second full-length release: "Doença", and just recently (as we have been talking now), their work has culminated so far with the new "Odor", and in the best way possible I daresay.
The line-up consists of António Baptista (guitars & vocals), Nuno Mendonça (bass) and João Lugatte (drums).
Tomorrow, we all metal heads from Madeira will have the privilege to experience live the new album "Odor" at MetalMad's Oath Circle Meeting II, as Basalto will be the second act to hit the Main Stage of this event. In the meantime, here's the video of "XV":

Karnak Seti - "Psicótica"
One of my favourites of melodic death metal band Karnak Seti, from my island Madeira, "Psicótica" is this track taken from their 2004 demo, equally called: "Karnak Seti".
The project started in 2001, with the first and original line-up being: Nelson Nascimento (vocals), Renato Ramos and António Jesus (guitars), Cláudio Aguiar (bass) and Nino Frazão (drums). Their first release came out in 2003, a 7-track demo named "Cosmic Fate", and up until 2008 they made three other demos, before launching their first full-length album in 2009: "Scars of Your Decay".
Afterwards they have released two other studio albums: "In Harmonic Entropy" in 2011, and "The Distance That Made Us Cold" in 2016.

Their last known line-up as of 2016, had Luís Erre on vocals, and Emanuel Freitas on the drums, with the remaining members still being the same from their early days.
Karnak Seti will return to the live shows this Friday, at MetalMad's Oath Circle Meeting II, being the first act to perform on the Main Stage, and also the only Madeirian band of the event, which to many of the crowd that will be present that night, will bring back memories of the many amazing gigs that Karnak Seti did in the island, one of the most influential Metal projects we had, and still have!
The project started in 2001, with the first and original line-up being: Nelson Nascimento (vocals), Renato Ramos and António Jesus (guitars), Cláudio Aguiar (bass) and Nino Frazão (drums). Their first release came out in 2003, a 7-track demo named "Cosmic Fate", and up until 2008 they made three other demos, before launching their first full-length album in 2009: "Scars of Your Decay".
Afterwards they have released two other studio albums: "In Harmonic Entropy" in 2011, and "The Distance That Made Us Cold" in 2016.

Their last known line-up as of 2016, had Luís Erre on vocals, and Emanuel Freitas on the drums, with the remaining members still being the same from their early days.

OAK - "Mirror"
This long 19 min. track "Mirror" is one of the first songs shown to the public by Portuguese funeral doom metal band OAK, of their upcoming debut full-length album "Lone", which is due to be released on 20th December of this year.
I say long but not boring, definitely on the opposite, it's a deep atmospheric track that takes your senses away on a whole different dimension, as if part of a great journey that "Lone" itself can provide. According to the band members, this album is like: "A long journey where you find yourself in the middle of multiple scenarios and you can almost see the landscaping as you hear the gigantic sounds that echo through all of those places. From the burden one could carry to hold this world to the claustrophobic maze that traps your soul. - an ummerciful journey between Life and Death".

OAK were formed in Porto, in the year of 2017, by Guilherme Henriques (guitars & vocals) and Pedro Soares (drums), who are also involved with the Portuguese black metal band Gaerea. Both of these projects will be at MetalMad's Oath Circle Meeting II in Funchal, but for OAK will be more of a return, as they already performed at DTOX bar last year in October, absorving everyone on the crowd with their doom and grim sound! Surely they will provide that experience again, next Friday night on the Free Stage of OCM II.

Greengo - "Youforyourself Satanforall"
Greengo are a Portuguese duo from Porto, and their musical genre according to the band themselves is: Rock n'Roll Stoner Metal Doom Weed, with a good dose of psicadelism and humour, as you will notice in this track.
They have released their first full-length album last year: "Dabstep", which will be presented to the crowd at Oath Circle Meeting II in Funchal, as they will perform on the Free Stage of DTOX bar this Friday, surely providing everyone with a massive and "green" experience!

Oath Circle Meeting II
So after inviting to the island last year, two Metal projects from the mainland, first was funeral doom metal band Oak, and secondly the black/death sound of Congruity, this time we will have not one or two, but four projects from the mainland!
Oak are back again from last year, and they will perform on the free stage of the show, along with the counterparts from Porto, Greengo. On the main stage, we will have melodic death metal band Karnak Seti from Madeira, the stoner metal sound of Basalto from Viseu, and black metal band Gaerea from Porto.

Incognita - "Say My Name"
I couldn't think of a better way to start the hostilities here at Insula Tenebris, and kick off with a Madeirian band by choosing none other than Incognita!
More than deserved, since in late 2018 they announced their reunion after 25 years of absence, with the promise of releasing new material the following year (this one). The first single came out in March: "Say My Name", which was also the first track of the upcoming EP "Polarization", inicially scheduled for release in May.
The release was eventually postponed for this month, and the EP now renamed "Three" will come out in less than 3 weeks, on 29th November, being as fair to its name will feature 3 tracks, one of them named (of course) "Say My Name", which I present bellow, a song aimed at those anonymous internet users, who take advantage of fake profiles to attack others and say all kinds of crap, while hiding as cowards behind a screen, says the singer Carlos Ferraz.
As you will tell immediatly, the track is powerful, thanks to its strong and groovy riffs, a reminiscence of what Incognita did in the mid 90's, in the EP "Life's a Bitch" and the full-length album "Madeirus Sarcasticus".
Up until 1998, before the band split up, they performed live in several shows and festivals in Portugal, sharing the same stage with big names such as Cradle of Filth. In 1994, they were also invited by Zé Pedro, of iconic Portuguese rock band Xutos & Pontapés, to play at his bar Johnny Guitar in Lisbon, where they recorded a live demo.
Nowadays Incognita consist of former members Carlos Ferraz, on vocals, Márcio Ferreira, on bass, Jorge Gonçalves and Isaac Marques on the drums, and the newcomer Jukka Haapakoski from Finland, on guitars.
